always use the chain
Elvis Presley topped the charts again yesterday - as Britain's favourite home security password.
Chiefs at British Gas are beating bogus callers by asking customers to choose a secret password to give to engineers on house calls. And Elvis is top of the celebrity password names - followed by John Lennon, Lord Lucan and Maggie Thatcher.
Now when people with suspicious minds ask, "Who's there?" when gas men call at homes, the engineers shout out, "Don't worry - it's Elvis Presley here." More than 30,000 people signed up to the secret password scheme with Elvis the top celeb. Engineer Jonathan Callow, from Cardiff said, "It's a bit weird shouting the name of a deceased pop star through a letterbox. "I think if Elvis actually answered the door I'd have a heart attack."
More than 30,000 homes across the country - mainly pensioners - are taking part in the scheme to protect against distraction burglaries and bogus callers. Beatle John Lennon is runner-up with 28 customers and missing Lord Lucan is next with 12.
